If the passenger facilities charge was doubled to $8.50 per flight, a family of four flying to a destination requiring a connecting flight would pay nearly $150 in the passenger facility charges, and that is on top of the existing $4 segment fee, a $5.60 security fee, and a 7.5 percent federal excise tax. It amounts to a total excise tax that approaches cigarette levels.
