Miami International Airport (MIA) last week broke ground on one of its first modernization projects, a Central Base modification and expansion project that includes an upgrade of 34.1 acres of asphalt and concrete pavement originally built in the 1960s.
The total construction cost is $76.2 million. Majority of the project (75%) is being funded by the Federal Aviation Administration and 50 percent of the remaining cost is being funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.
This project is part of MIA’s $5 billion, airport-wide capital improvement program. According to the airport, completion of this program will enable MIA to serve a projected 77 million travelers and more than four million tons of freight projected by the year 2040.
